A slug is the readable tail of a URL — nerdytools.com/zakat-calculator/ — and it does quiet work for both humans and search engines: it previews the page, survives copy-paste, and reads well in a link. Paste a title or phrase and this generator converts it into a clean, lowercase, hyphenated slug.
Exactly What the Generator Does
The transformation is a five-step pipeline, applied in order:
- Unicode normalization (NFKD): accented characters decompose into a base letter plus a combining mark — é becomes e + ´.
- Diacritic stripping: the combining marks are removed, leaving plain ASCII letters: é → e, ü → u, ñ → n.
- Lowercasing: the whole string is folded to lowercase.
- Ampersand expansion:
&becomes the wordand— the one symbol the generator spells out rather than discards. - Separator collapsing: every run of characters that is not a–z or 0–9 (spaces, punctuation, symbols, dashes) collapses into a single hyphen, and hyphens at the edges are trimmed.
That is the complete rule set — notably, the generator does not remove stop words ("the," "a," "to" stay if you type them), does not spell out other symbols (% and $ simply become separators and typically vanish), and does not shorten your text. What you type is what gets slugged, cleaned but not edited.
Worked Examples
| Input | Output |
| --- | --- |
| Café & Croissant: Paris 2026 Guide! | cafe-and-croissant-paris-2026-guide |
| 100% Free SEO Tools (Updated) | 100-free-seo-tools-updated |
| Über cool AI-Powered Apps — $50 Off | uber-cool-ai-powered-apps-50-off |
| Leading & Trailing Spaces... | leading-and-trailing-spaces |
Read the second row carefully: the % does not become the word "percent" — it is punctuation, collapses into the separator run, and the leading/trailing trims do the rest. If you want "percent" in the slug, type the word. The em dash and $ in row three disappear the same way, while the pre-existing hyphen in "AI-Powered" survives as a separator like any other.
Slug Craft: What You Add Beyond the Generator
The tool guarantees a valid slug; making it a good one is editorial. Keep it short and descriptive — three to six words that carry the page's topic and primary keyword; search results truncate long URLs and humans retype short ones accurately. Use hyphens, not underscores — Google's documentation recommends hyphens as word separators, while underscores are treated as joiners (ai_powered reads as one word). Do not keyword-stuff — repeating the topic four ways adds length, not ranking. Leave dates out of evergreen URLs so the page can be updated without changing its address. And a rule that outranks all others for existing sites: do not change a live slug casually — a published URL accumulates backlinks and rankings, and renaming it without a permanent 301 redirect from old to new throws that equity away and strands visitors at a 404. Generate freely for new pages; rename old ones only with a redirect plan.
Limitations
Titles written entirely in scripts outside the Latin alphabet (Arabic, Chinese, Cyrillic) contain no a–z characters for the pipeline to keep and return an error rather than a slug — such sites typically use transliteration, English slugs, or percent-encoded URLs by design. The generator also cannot check uniqueness: two pages can share a generated slug, and your CMS or routing layer remains responsible for detecting the collision.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the slug affect SEO rankings?
Modestly and mostly indirectly: words in a URL are a minor relevance signal, but the larger effects are human — descriptive slugs earn more clicks when URLs are displayed or shared, and clear slugs get linked with better anchor context. Treat the slug as good labeling, not a ranking lever to obsess over.
Why lowercase everything?
Because URLs are case-sensitive on most servers: /Tools and /tools can resolve as different pages, splitting links and creating duplicates. Lowercase-everything is the convention that removes the entire class of problem — and it is why the generator folds case rather than preserving your capitalization.
Should I include the full title as the slug?
Rarely. Full titles carry articles, punctuation-driven phrasing, and length that URLs wear badly. Generate the slug from the title, then edit it down to the essential topic words before publishing — the generator gives you the clean raw material in one click.
