Age Calculator — Online Calculator

Calculate Your Exact Age

Enter your date of birth to get your precise age in years, months, days, hours, and minutes — plus your next birthday countdown.

Age looks like a subtraction and behaves like a calendar puzzle: months have different lengths, February changes size, and "how old" depends on whether this year's birthday has happened yet. Enter a date of birth and a target date and this calculator returns the exact age — years, months, and days — plus total days lived, the day of the week you were born, and a countdown to the next birthday.

How It Works

The calculator does calendar arithmetic the way you would by hand, borrowing included:

  1. Years: target year minus birth year, minus one if the birthday has not yet occurred in the target year.
  2. Months: the full months elapsed since the last birthday.
  3. Days: the remaining days — and when the target day-of-month is smaller than the birth day-of-month, it borrows the exact length of the previous month (28, 29, 30, or 31 days as appropriate), which is where naive calculators that assume 30-day months go wrong.

Totals are computed from real day counts, so every leap day lived is included: total days, total hours (days × 24), and total minutes. The next-birthday result finds this year's birthday — or next year's, if it has passed — and counts the days to it.

| Output | Meaning | | --- | --- | | Years / months / days | Exact chronological age at the target date | | Total days | Absolute days between the two dates | | Total hours / minutes | Total days × 24 and × 1,440 | | Born on | Day of the week of the birth date | | Next birthday | Date of and days until the upcoming birthday |

Worked Example

Born 15 March 1990, age on 17 August 2026:

  • Years: 2026 − 1990 = 36 (the March birthday has passed by August)
  • Months: March → August = 5 full months
  • Days: 17 − 15 = 2 days
  • Age: 36 years, 5 months, 2 days
  • Total days lived: 13,304 (hours: 319,296); born on a Thursday
  • Next birthday: Monday, 15 March 2027 — 210 days away

The borrowing rule shows itself with trickier dates: born 31 January, measured on 1 March, the day count borrows February's real length — 29 days in a leap year, 28 otherwise — which is precisely the case quick mental arithmetic fumbles.

Why Exact Age Matters

Institutions run on exact age, not vibes: school enrollment cut-offs, legal majority and licensing, pension and retirement eligibility, insurance underwriting, sports age divisions, and medical dosing bands all key off the years-months-days figure at a specific date — which is why the target-date input exists: "age on the first day of term," "age at the policy start," "age at the event." Set the target to the date the institution cares about, not today. A note for the leap-day born (29 February): in common years there is no 29 February, and conventions differ — many systems observe the birthday on 1 March (the date this calculator's calendar math effectively lands on), others on 28 February; legal ages are usually deemed attained at the start of the day before the anniversary in some jurisdictions. If a deadline turns on it, verify the local rule. Finally, a cultural footnote that is now history: South Korea traditionally counted age from 1 at birth, incrementing each New Year, but officially adopted the international system used here in June 2023 — this calculator uses the international convention throughout.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my age not just the difference in years?

Because the year difference only holds after your birthday. Born in December and measured in June, you have not yet had this year's birthday, so the correct age is one less than the raw subtraction — the calculator applies that adjustment (and the equivalent borrowing for months and days) automatically.

What does the target date do?

It answers "how old on that day" instead of today — for school cut-offs, eligibility dates, event entries, or historical questions. Leave it blank and the calculator uses today. A birth date after the target date is rejected as invalid.

How are total hours and minutes derived?

From the exact total day count: hours = total days × 24 and minutes = total days × 1,440. They are calendar-day totals rather than stopwatch measurements, so daylight-saving clock changes do not disturb them — a deliberate choice that keeps the totals clean multiples of the day count.
